Parents
Whether they’re 8, 18 or older, parents seem to have a whole new host of challenges to contend with when raising their children in today’s fast paced and high tech world.
From high-priced video games, iPods and cell phones, to the skyrocketing cost of everything from clothes, gas and college, the lives of tweens, teens and young adults are decidedly more complicated and so is the role of parenting.
With questions like these…
Should you get your 11 year old a cell phone?
Is giving your teenager a credit card responsible parenting or insanity?
When (if at all) should you give your children allowance and what are the rules?
What is the right age and under what circumstances should your child get a job?
How do you teach your kids about money without burdening them with your bills?
...on the minds for parents who want to:
Teach their children of all ages the “value of a dollar”
Help their kids understand that “money doesn’t grow on trees” and
Raise their children to be financially independent
The need for financial literacy, responsibility and awareness has never been stronger than it is today. If parents don’t teach their kids about money, someone else will - or worse yet - they will learn by trial and error. Either way, the results could be disastrous not only for the individual but the overall economy.
Sanyika Calloway Boyce knows first hand that financial ignorance is not bliss, as an honor student who graduated from college early she did everything right academically but everything wrong financially and shortly after graduation found herself unemployed in her career of choice, financially frustrated, and on the verge of declaring bankruptcy.
Now as The Financial Fitness Coach, Sanyika has written several books on personal finance. She is also a columnist for Young Money magazine, and strives to teach tweens, teens and their parents how to demystify money and use everyday experiences as teachable money moments to raise credit conscious, saving savvy and financially fit kids.
